Well, hello little blog that I've severely neglected. Long time no see. Since I last posted here, I have celebrated several holidays, done lots of school work, been promoted, lost weight, been up, been down, been sideways, and been drunk.
Oh yeah, I graduated from college too.
And I have been asked the question, "So what are you going to do now," so many times that I just might strangle the next person that asks me. You know what?? I have no F*cking clue what I'm going to do now. I know what I want to do now, but they don't exactly list tour management jobs on job search sites. So, I'm just going to try to get into the live music industry in any way I possibly can. I'm gonna learn things and meet people. And I'm not going to say no to any opportunity that shows up. That's an incredibly vague answer to the question, but it's the best I can come up with without whipping out my business plan (yes, I've written a business plan. Wanna see it??).
So, for probably the first time that I can remember, I have no real idea of where I'm going to be a year from now. I don't even know if I'll be living in the same city. I find this a wee bit scary, but mostly exciting. I love not knowing what's coming next. It makes everything feel like an adventure.

A Week Late New Year's Blog
He who breaks a resolution is a weakling;
He who makes one is a fool.
~F.M. Knowles
New Year's Eve is usually a sucky holiday for me. For the last several years I've either been working really late at a job that I hate, in the midst of family drama, fighting with friends, or having one of those fights with friends that only really happens inside my head. Last year was better. It was my my first New Year's Eve in Denver, and I spent it with the one close friend I had made here at that point.
This year continued the tradition of better-than-usual New Year's Eves. I spent it with a few of my friends having too much tequila/rum/whatever else, listening to music, playing with fire, and generally goofing around. New Year's Day was decidedly less fun for everyone involved. I'm sure you can imagine why.
As you may guess by the quote I headed this with, I don't make New Year's Resolutions. I find them pointless and transitory. They are just one more way we lie to ourselves on the pretense of becoming better people. Real changes are made on days other than January 1st.
However, I do like to contemplate what the next year will bring. 2011 is going to be a big year in Aubrey Land. If all goes according to plan, I will be graduating college in December. Sometimes that date seems excruciatingly far off, other times frighteningly close. I am beginning to appreciate what an accomplishment this is. An astonishing amount of time and effort (and money!) go into receiving that piece of paper that says "You're smart!" Between now and then I am trying to get an internship so that I have a hope of getting a job once said graduation date arrives. So if you happen to hear of any artist management companies looking for interns, give me a call. ;)
So far, all 2011 has brought me is a cell phone dropped in a glass of water, and a week of terrible insomnia. Here's hoping the next 51 weeks are a little better than week #1. :-)

Time off
Glory glory hallelujah, winter break is upon us. Actually, it has been for about a week and a half. Since the semester ended, I have been possessed with a profound desire to sleep. This is thanks in part to the severe lack of sleep brought about by end-of-semester madness, and also to the hoards of insane people I had to put up with at work. Do me a favor, and go hug someone working in retail.
Things to accomplish before spring semester starts
Things to accomplish before spring semester starts
- Clean and organize my bedroom, and clean out my closet
- Finally unpack the last 2 boxes (I moved 4 months ago)
- Finish the quilt I started in May
- Paint something
- Write something
- Read something
- Spend a day doing only things I want to do, rather than things I have to do

Welcome Aboard
I've been thinking of starting this blog for a while. As I seem either unable or unwilling to sleep, tonight seems to be as good a time as any. I intend for this to be a dumping ground for the things that bounce around my head. I might even occasionally post some of my poetry here. Be advised: I am a strange person, so strange things bounce around my head. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Have you ever been so busy that you streamline your thoughts? Anything that's not essential gets pushed into the corner for review at a later date. I've caught myself doing this a lot in the past few weeks, which is quite unusual for me, Little Ms. Daydreamer. I have been so focused on what I have to get done and what time I have to do it in that I have no space for anything else. This caused problems for me last week when I was trying to write a song for my songwriting class. I had no mental energy left to be creative with. I found myself with nothing to write about, which doesn't usually happen. I guess I depend on my "superfluous" thoughts for my creativity. Since my life consists of school, work, and homework, I ended up writing about work. The resulting song is kinda funny, and I had fun writing it, but I know I can do better. I have done better. The perfectionist in me is not happy with it. The realist in me says I've done worse, and it was pretty good for the circumstances. I tend to smother my inner realist, though.
But there's no time to dwell on what is already done. I have a giant marketing plan project due on Wednesday. I'm having fun working on it. Yeah, that's right, I said fun. I think that when you have fun doing work for your classes, you know you've picked the right major. The only problem is it's taking a long time because there's a TON of work involved. I've also got quite a few other assignments due this week. I get a break next week for Thanksgiving, but I have to spend some of it getting caught up on things. The week after Thanksgiving I have a performance for the vocal ensemble I'm in, then it's full-tilt until the end of the semester. Songs, papers, and tests, oh my! I'll get it done. I just gotta remind myself to breathe every once in a while.
